As electronic commerce becomes a more integral part of organizations, the need to incorporate existing and future technologies in order to remain competitive has become more and more vital to success. The reality is that how and when an organization uses information technology is now more than ever a very critical issue that must be addressed and re-addrressed on a regular basis. Computer and information technology professionals play a vital role in the strategic direction of their organizations. They participate in everything from constructing the business plan to overseeing information systems operations.

Computer and information systems managers plan, coordinate, and direct research and design the technology-related activities of organizations and firms. They set technical goals in consultation with executive management, and design detailed plans for attaining these goals. For example, working with their technical team, they may design the overall concepts of a revolutionary new product or analyze and solve computer-related problems impeding project completion.

Computer and information technology systems managers oversee and perform the work of systems analys, computer programming, information technology support, and many other information technologya and computer-related endeavors. These managers plan and direct activities such as the installation and upgrading of company wide hardware and software systems, programming and systems upgrades, the development of complex computer networks, and the implementation of Internet and intranet systems. Information technology managers are increasingly responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of internal and external computer information networks. IT managers and IT professionals must always continue there education and today many are choosing the convenience of online continuing education technology courses to stay on top.

Network or computer systems administrators perform a number of critical tasks. They design, install, and support an organization's LAN, WAN, network segment, Internet, or Intranet system. They maintain network hardware and software ingregrity, analyze complex technology issues, and monitor internal and external networks to ensure availability and proper functionality for system users. These IT professionals gather mission critical data to identify customer needs and then use that information to identify, interpret, and evaluate system and network requirements. Network and computer administrators also play a major role in planning, coordinating, and implementing network security measures.

Systems administrators are the information technology professionals that ensure efficient use of networks by organizations. They ensure that the design of a firm's computer information systems allows all the components, including computers, the network, and software, to fit together and function properly to fulfill their designated functions efficiently and reliably. Additionally, they monitor and adjust performance of existing networks and continually survey the current computer site to determine future network needs. Network administrators also troubleshoot problems as reported by employess and customers and make recommendations for enhancements and corrections in the design of future servers and networks.

Management of information systems (MIS) professionals manage the computer information systems for their organizations.
